An article originally found in the Times Colonist news source last week reported on some changes that could well result in the institution of online poker faster than expected in British Columbia, Canada. While most were hoping that the measure would be ready to go by the end of the year, the latest report courtesy of Rich Coleman, speaking as provincial minister, has that launch of internet gambling on line by September, three months ahead of schedule. The program, designed to be a peer-to-peer online poker program in the province of British Columbia, has been a much anticipated event for the progress and development of the online gambling industry in Canada. Coleman is the minister which oversees the gambling market for the nation, and is one of the key pieces of getting the change in legislature for British Columbia passed, hopefully paving the way for internet poker in other provinces as well. The poker games will still be overseen by the government, but the software behind the new initiative allows players to hook up directly with one another over the internet to play poker. The innovative elements of the peer-to-peer programming has also caught the attention of provinces like the Maritimes and Quebec, who are considering making similar moves, depending on the success of the British Columbia program this fall. The launch of the other regions’ P2P projects will be a key piece for the success of the whole project, as the more players available, the better the online gambling will be. A few other regulations have been laid down, to protect players as well, Coleman told fellow politicians. "With regard to spending limits, they're set by the individual - how much they feel they can spend,” he said. “We found that all research says that the best responsible gaming mechanism is if people set their limits, so the range allows people to set their limits within what they think they can afford and what they're going to play." They will, however, monitor the play by members, “…, so that we can make sure that people aren't getting themselves into difficulty the way they do on most other Internet sites." |
