As the popularity of online gambling’s mobile gaming sector grows, the concern that underage bettors are accessing internet casino also is growing. One politician out of Australia, Senator Nick Xenophon, has added the fight to his To Do list this month, calling for attention to be paid to the escalating probability that underage kids are accessing online gambling services through their phones. It’s the latest attack on internet gambling by Xenophon, as he’s known as one of the strongest proponents against the industry in Australia. Many of the applications on devices such as the iPhone are free of charge, costing nothing to bet. Of course nothing is won, either, Because no real money is involved, the security for these free apps is often not up to par, allowing underage gamblers with half an intent to sign on and play. This presents a danger to the youthful populations, a responsibility that Xenophon is calling for action about, asking that such applications be banned. Their identical nature to real slot and gambling games is building an addiction for gambling among underage players. "It's irresponsible to allow these applications in the hands of children," Xenophon told Australian Associated Press. "We already have a big enough gambling problem in this country and there is no doubt this will fuel gambling addiction. Kids can become poker machines experts years before they are legally allowed to set eyes on a real machine." Xenophon has said that he has every intention of taking the matter to Parliament, fighting until all gambling applications – real money or otherwise – have been prohibited from mobile gambling. The AAP has confirmed that the recommended age of use for some of the games is as low as 12 years. Others fail to suggest a minimum age at all, or even inquire it of the members. Xenophon has said that he believes the applications are no more than training devices, teaching children how to lose money legally when they turn 18. "The use of money, albeit fantasy, drills home a false impression that poker machines can be a source of money or income," Senator Xenophon told the news service. |
