As more governments consider legalization of online gambling, there are only so many concerns that bar them from doing so – with one of them being the want to protect users of internet casinos from addiction. Many of the world’s most popular and largest online casinos already have programs in place to discourage irresponsible behavior on their sites, but one district in Canada has taken the matter into their own hands as the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority recently committed themselves to an initiative directed specifically at youthful gamblers. The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority is putting up the funds needed to run a campaign designed to educate young people against the risks associated with gambling, especially with the convenience of internet casinos making all night play so accessible. It’s target demographic has been identified as men between the ages of 18 to 24, the same group found to be the most susceptible to gambling addictions and problems with controlling betting behaviors. According to a statement made by the chief executive officer of the Council, John Kelly, those who are just experiencing their first years of freedom are especially vulnerable to falling in with problem gambling. "People who are 18 to 24 are the most at risk to have a gambling problem," said Kelly. "Same as many other problems that people who are 18 to 24 can get into. So if you are 20 years old and you're going to have a gambling problem, you are much more likely to develop it at 20 than you are at 50." The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was one of the first press sources to get the word out about the campaign, being called ‘Know the Score.’ It was launched at the University of Regina, and is being managed by the Responsible Gambling Council. One of the key pieces includes the education about online gambling, as the mobile gaming culture spreading throughout the world makes the convenient medium the most attractive to internet-savvy youths. |
