Though the popularity of the online gambling world is often attacked for being a cause or perpetuator of corruption in the professional sports world, one story being told through Australian newspapers is telling a whole different tale. Instead, the industry is stepping up through well-respected internet casino group Betfair in efforts to curb corruption, through bet tracking and flawless book-keeping.

The sports betting group has once again stepped up and voluntarily cooperated with police officials to settle a case regarding suspicious betting patterns, this time in relation to the horse betting sector down under. As a result of their raised alarm, an investigatory probe has been launched to look into the actions of jockey Dan Nikolic. Racing Victoria is the racing body at the head of the issue.

It was Betfair, however, that noted the suspicious activity. One of their preventative programs, a customer integrity program, raised a red flag on the horse Finishing Card, who managed to somehow beat out the favorite to win Mornington on January 8th. The investigation has included inquiries into the biggest names in racing, though most of the activity is centered around Nikolic. Several trainers have already come in to give evidence at Racing Victoria’s headquarters. The facts uncovered have extended the limits of the investigation to include races as far back as November 2009.

"We can supply named information of punters to stewards and it gives a level of transparency to them they have not had before," Betfair's Hugh Taggart said. ''We monitor our betting operation seven days a week and provide information to any sports we bet on when we think it is necessary. It is a two-way street with the stewards and we will help them with any information where we can." Nikolic continues to maintain is innocence in any wrongdoing.
