A surprise winner managed to hold out and take the first place prize in the $25,000 buy-in North American Poker Tour Venetian High Roller Bounty Shootout this week, hosted by the online gambling website Poker Stars. The youth, aged 21-years old, made the trip to Las Vegas to take the tournament by storm, as Ashton Griffin won the first place prize of $560,000 and beating out the other 49 high rollers who showed to try their hand.

The player is by no means an amateur, however. The professional poker player calls Florida his home, but frequents the online casino scene to make his living in between live events, known very well among the high stakes players that rule the internet casino Full Tilt. Griffin held out through seven heats of seven hands, reaching at last an intimidating final table, consisting of Hoyt Corkins, Joe Cassidy, Scott Seiver, Faraz Jaka, Brett Richey and former WSOP champ Peter Eastgate as competitors.

Not to say that the road to the final table was any piece of cake. As the live tournament was hosted by the biggest online gambling brand in poker, Poker Stars, it attracted a range of stars: the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, Jason Mercier, Chris Moneymaker, Phil Hellmuth, Annie Duke, Jennifer Tilly, Phil Laak, and Phil Galfond all showed for the North American event, turning out more names than the internet casino might have anticipated.

A cash bounty was added for sheer bonus, with $5,000 of each of the players’ $25,000 buy-in reserved just for that purpose, adding a whole new layer of winnings to the prizes. The seven winners from the opening rounds won $75,000 for the accomplishment before moving on to the final table. In addition to the bounties, the player who collected the most bounties, meaning eliminated the most competition, also was rewarded with $100,000 of Poker Stars’ money.

Griffin’s first place came after a verifiable challenge at the last table, resuling in a brief heads up with runner-up Hoyt Corkins. It only tool two hands for Griffin to claim his title, and Corkins was sent home with $100,000 for his trouble. Griffin was awarded the first prize of $455,000 as well as his final table $75K, and another $30,000 in bounties.
