Yet another story is sailing out of Australia, which has provided the internet gambling community with a slew of news in the last week. This time the tale comes courtesy of one online casino group that actually has the favor of the local governments, a truth reinforced with the extension of their contract for the next ten years. Though Betfair will undoubtedly continue to fight and lobby in regards to Australian tax laws that affect their bottom line (some say unfairly) for now enough peace has been reached for the Tasmanian government to concede to approving their internet gambling license for the next decade. According to reports, the Tasmanian territory of Australia has agreed to allow the online gambling company Betfair to continue their operations from the region for the next ten years. The deal includes a significant tax break clause, giving the internet casino firm a reason to stay in Tasmania versus relocating operations to a more competitive location. Taxpayers will end up paying for the deal, a staggering $2 million over the next ten years, but the agreement will allow Betfair to keep their Support Center in Hobart, Tasmania. The concession will allow 130 employees of the Center to keep their jobs. The operations of Betfair Australia are courtesy of the group’s partnership with the Packer group of Crown PBL companies. All of the corporations associated under the brand are owned and controlled in large by James Packer. Though the agreement has been agreed upon by both the government officials and the online gambling firm, the extension will not be formally approved until it can be signed off on by Parliament, which will return to session after the state election, scheduled for March 20th, 2010. |
