Poker players seemed to enjoy their time in Las Vegas this week as the first ever North American Poker Tour found itself with a healthy jump-start turnout at the Venetian casino and resort. Stars and respected player names from both the live game circuit and online casino circles turned up to enjoy the event, which kicked off with an impressive 872 players signing up for participation. The first event was that of a No Limit Hold’Em tournament this past weekend, priced with a buy-in of $5,000.

The North American Poker Tour, fondly now being referred to as the NAPT, is hosted by the online gambling group Poker Stars.net. 2010 marks the inaugural year for the NAPT, timed well to fill a tournament gap between other well-known poker events throughout the world. Correspondingly, a number of international stars showed at the Venetian, creating a healthy air of competition, and featuring a number of sponsored players from the online casino.

Eight hundred and seventy two players signed up, nearly filling the 890 maximum set on the event. At the same time, a lesser qualifying event was taking place in Los Angeles, California, with players having to choose between attending the World Poker Tour Invitational at the Commerce, and the NAPT there in Las Vegas. Plenty of big players chose the desert with top spots being filled by the likes of Justin Bonomo, Kevin Saul, Hevad Khan, David Benyamine, Phil Hellmuth, Shaun Deeb, Kathy Liebert, Theo Tran, JC Tran, Chino Rheem and Chad Brown.

By Sunday, only 475 players remained to vie over the first place prize of $825,000. Local professional Andy Seth held the lead in chip counts. The Poker Stars.net NAPT is also hosting a special game to benefit the charity Southern Nevada’s Three Square Food Bank. The game raised $42,000 for the cause, with pros and celebrities like Christian Slater, Jason Alexander, Slash and T-Pain donating their time.
