A lesson is to be found in this week’s winning lottery ticket tale, as a couple from Indianapolis nearly missed out on the luck of a lifetime. Lori and Eric White could very easily lost out on their winning opportunity, having hit the jackpot for the Hoosier Lotto and not known about it for six months, discovering the happy surprise just a week before the ticket was set to expire. A mistake that could have very well left them without the $2.5 million that they have today. The ticket was under their noses the whole time. The Whites wouldn’t necessarily call themselves gamblers, as they rarely frequent online casinos or internet gambling sites of any kind, preferring the classic ticket purchases from their local store. And so the Hoosier Lotto ticket sat on the desk in their home office for six months straight, neither Eric nor Lori thinking that they’d struck it rich. It was only an announcement by the lottery officials that the $2.5 million wouldn’t be awarded as they’d not come forward in the 180-day period. A miscalculation in the expiration date was the only thing that saved the White’s unknown fortune. The deadline to cash in was extended to February 22nd, and it was that newscast that had Lori wondering about old lottery tickets. Two days later, the mystery numbers were discovered and the winners finally named. After taxes, the sum of the winnings came to a lump amount of about $697,000. Apparently, it wasn’t even the largest lotto to have gone unclaimed, something that never happens in the online gambling world. In September of 2002, a $50 million Powerball jackpot was unclaimed; in March of 2004, no one wanted the $5 million Hoosier Lotto won. "They were in a pile of books on the desk," said 39-year-old Eric White. The following morning, officials verified the winning digits, 4-5-17-30-38-43, and met with a financial advisor for the future of their funds. |
