More news hits the online gambling industry out of Kansas City this week as a couple of brothers add themselves to the list of guilty pleas in an ongoing investigation into illegal online gambling in the area. Two men in the case have already sealed their fates by pleading guilty in the investigation, earning themselves reduced jail time, but also avoiding the mandate to testify against others involved in the scheme. Two more, this time brothers, have decided to go the same route this week. Michael and Anthony Samsone, ages 30 and 27, have confessed to their participation in an illegal internet gambling ring in Kansas City, the focus of a federal investigation for months. The scheme, which utilized offshore internet casinos to place sports bets illegally, was busted by the authorities months ago. The Sansone brother confessed to their roles, admitting to setting up a toll free telephone line and web site for their patrons to place bets through. Wagers were then wired to Costa Rica, and the illegal bets processed there, out of the reach of the US authorities. Though most of the investigation has transpired over the last year, many of the arrests were made on March 31 of 2009, when authorities felt they had enough evidence to go public with the case. Federal agents launched a series of raids, arresting dozens, seizing computers and laptops and money. Of the arrests, more than ten refused to cooperate, and testify before the Grand Jury, and were jailed for contempt of court. In his testimony, Michael Sansone forfeited $4,039 to the police, as well as his computer. Both items were seized in the raids last year. |
