A very successful campaign for Problem Gambling Awareness ended early this month, with the final hurrah being a huge push on information across the United States. While most online gambling companies have at some point dedicated efforts to work against problem gambling, and offering research, funding and resources to programs to help those addicted to internet casinos, the opportunity for all the internet gambling groups to cooperatively come together was a success indeed. It’s a valid concern. Problem gambling is on the rise in the US, though most online gambling experts attribute that fact to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and the active prohibition against the industry. Should the politicians overturn the law and legalize the free use of online casinos, the number would drop drastically, they say – but for now, as problem gambling grows, the need for treatment and prevention programs swells as well. Oregon, Florida, Maine, New York and Maryland are just a few of the states that jumped on board the Problem Gambling Awareness Week, each using their available resources to raise awareness in the public. The National Council on Problem Gambling played a huge role in organizing the events, utilizing their branches throughout the US to set up information books, and similarly structured seminars. "Most states have done a good job of allotting funds to ensure that preventative measures are taken when they expand gambling," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "But still more needs to be done. Gambling addiction can be a silent killer if it is not dealt with in a timely manner." |
