Though the online gambling industry is still a battlefield in the United States, the nation of Lithuania has made some significant progress in defining an answer to one of the most vehement issues in the market- once and for all defining poker as a sport and not a game of chance. The official decree was released by the Lithuanian sports ministry this week, causing a celebration throughout the online gambling community. The Baltic state is making surprisingly progressive moves towards the regulation of online gambling, light years ahead of other debating countries such as the US. The government's Department of Physical Education and Sports announced on the 20th of March that the Lithuanian sports poker federation would henceforth be recognized as an official sports organization. Andius Tapinas released a statement to the Internet gambling press following the decision, speaking as President of the Lithuanian Sport Poker Federation. "We are receiving congratulations from many of our colleagues abroad and I know that we are breaking thick ice with our progress for similar international initiatives," he said. Additionally, the new official tournament schedule will be short in following, as it should soon be released to the sports media. The first event scheduled will be that of the inaugural LSPF tourney, from April 24 to 26th. Tapinas has a large personal interest in the progression of poker in his home nation, known locally for his large cashes in poker tournaments, including both the World Series of Poker and the Unibet Open. |
