The case is being spread rather quickly throughout the online gambling news sources from Australia, where a gambling corruption case in Victoria has been heating up. This week saw the official charges issued against Nikolic, courtesy of the Racing Victoria organization. No updated statement has yet been received from the jockey, though he has consistently denied any involvement or wrongdoing in the investigation into nine of his horses, involving a number of races since November of 2009. According to a piece in The Australian newspaper, the jockey is under arrest for his purported involvement in a scheme taking advantage of the online gambling industry for profit; Nikolic is a former bookmaker himself, but now acts as a punter for his own interests – and considering his role as jockey, he is the prime suspect in series of unscrupulous bets placed and won. The official charges read under AR175(p), combined with the failure or refusal to comply with any order, direction or requirement of racing stewards. Apparently, despite his already being under investigation, Nikolic refused to provide his mobile telephone number for the inspection of his contacts and calls, a decision that has been deemed a refusal to comply with the ongoing Finishing Card investigation. Jockeys’ rules ban the use of any phones within the area of the jockeys’ room, and Nikolic is known to have used his cell phone at the Flemington Racetrack without permission on the 1st of January. He has since been ordered to appear at an inquiry into the matter at the Racing Victoria’s offices next week. The case was brought to the forefront of the sports betting world’s attention courtesy of internet gambling group, Betfair, one of a few online casino firms that continues to exceed market standards for responsible gambling.
