According to a recent report by the McClatchy Tribune, a popular information source for political and lobbyist interests, the potential for wealth in online gambling in the United States could be far above other estimates, with the latest summaries hinting that profits could be worth more than $20 million this year alone, despite the continued efforts by the proponents of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Because of this potential, the interests for pro-online gambling investment and lobbying activities continue to grow at an impressive rate. Among the efforts of pushing for political change in the internet casino industry are successful online gambling companies wishing to be part of the inevitable American market. Harrah’s Entertainment, known best for their domination of the Las Vegas strip’s land-based casinos, Poker Stars and the Interactive Gaming Council are all groups making sure that a portion of their money is going back into efforts towards legalization. Harrah’s alone mandatorily revealed that they spent more than $3 million in different promotional efforts on the behalf of the internet gambling industry. The Interactive Gaming Council contributed another $2.3 million to the movement. Poker Stars is known as one of the indisputable leaders in the internet casino world, easily marking them as the largest and by far most popular online poker site. They contributed an easy $300,000 through intermediary Representative Dick Gephardt towards the effort. The former House of Representatives’ Democrat now serves his political interests through a successful lobbying business, making the most of his connections. One the flip side of the American battle stand a number of formidable opponents: many professional sports leagues such as the National Football League continue to insist that legalization will lead only to corruption of sports. The NFL lobbied a minimum of $800,000 last year in their effort to detract Congressman Barney Frank from his efforts. |
