The arguments surrounding the legalization of online gambling are ramping up in Canada this week, as the Ontario Lottery Chief published his strong opinion that the legalization of internet casinos is the only viable alternative to the millions of dollars that is finding itself in the profited hands of offshore firms. The new chairman for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, Paul Godfrey, wants to join the other Canadian provinces in their progress of keying into the growing market, as British Columbia, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces all are moving towards getting a piece of the online casino money pie.

According to a report this week by the Toronto Star, Godfrey has recommended that legalization be seriously reconsidered as the way to beat their competition, and keep bettors from utilizing other national lotteries as well as offshore platforms. "When you see what's going on in British Columbia, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces ... it's something I would explore," Godfrey was quoted as saying at a recent news conference, held to commemorate his induction as the new chairman for the Ontario Lottery Group. The region would do well for some good press in the online gambling industry, as they have previously been known for scandals regarding insider wins and dubious expense accounts. "Money is going out of this province to other provinces as well as offshore sites," he said.

The change made with his appointment is one of the major pieces to the Ontario Lottery Group’s recent restructuring. Give new board members will also join the newly developing team, under the appointment of Ontario Finance Director, Minister Dwight Duncan. Many experts in the internet casino world are hypothesizing that the changes are indicators that the Group will be looking to privatize in the coming months, a supposition that has yet to be confirmed by authorities. First, Godfrey said, the emphasis must be on rebuilding the trust with the public after last year’s scandals. Though he can’t ‘un-ring the bell,’ he will do everything he can to earn back the trust that was lost.
