Poker players who frequent the online gambling website Full Tilt Poker will want to be aware of rumors circulating the internet casino community this week, as the poker message board TwoPlusTwo has suggested that FBI agents are looking into the firm’s activities as they apply to US citizens. Though the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act effectively prohibits the use of online casinos by American citizens, the access to online gambling websites over the web is absolutely pervasive, and many poker players continue to frequent Full Tilt, as the second most popular site for the game. According to the rumors, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the site, investigating activities as they most directly apply to players in the state of Washington. While the UIGEA is on the federal level, it targets financial and credit card companies, not the players themselves. Washington, however, is the only region in which the laws ban players themselves, holding them responsible for accessing internet casinos. So far, no news of charges against players or Full Tilt from the FBI’s inquiries. Some industry experts are hypothesizing that the investigation is not looking to target players who use the site now, but instead could be part of a larger preparation for this coming summer. While most financial groups have chosen to bypass processing transactions from well-known gambling companies in an effort to willingly comply with the UIGEA, the enforcement clause will not actually go into effect until June 1, 2010. There has been speculation that the FBI efforts now are part of plans to better prepare for the enforcement of the useless law this summer. Some players have been able to confirm the supposition, having met and interviewed with agents of the FBI in Washington state. They said that the officials were mostly interested in understanding how Full Tilt related to their US members, and how transactions were processed. Most called the inquiries ‘information-seeking,’ solidifying the opinion that a case is already being built against the online gambling group. |
