The 6th Annual National Heads Up Poker Championship found its winner this week in a player well known to the online gambling community – Annie Duke. Though Duke is often present in the most high profile live tournaments, she also has solidified her skills and career through her ambassador relationship with the Cereus poker network in the internet gambling community. She managed to hold her own, winning this latest title from a slew of other well-respected poker players, dominating til the end at the Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Her heads up competition came with a hefty resume to top, as Erik Seidel has been awarded eight World Series of Poker bracelets, and is one of the top grossing players of all time in terms of career wins, sitting pretty in ninth place on the all-time money list. Taking the game one step further, the finals included a best-of-three requirement, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Duke deserved her $500,000 prize. For his efforts, Seidel was awarded $250,000. It was a pleasing ending for Duke, who has participated in five other National Heads Up Poker Championship, to never having made it past the second round before. In fact she only made it out of the first round once before, so her win came as somewhat a surprise to many in the internet casino community. It was a well-earned win, as Duke beat out the likes of Andy Bloch, Darvin Moon, Paul Wasicka, Jerry Yang and Dennis Phillips. Her under-dog recovery against Wasicka to win the third round was one of the most exciting times of the whole championship. The tournament hosted 64 of the top poker names in the industry, each competing in a series of one-on-one heads up matches, playing No Limit Hold’em. The single elimination, bracket style format differs greatly from most poker tournaments, and waned for three days. "I'm so excited to win such a prestigious event and join the likes of Huck Seed, Chris Ferguson and Phil Hellmuth as Heads-Up Champion," said Duke, who became the first-ever woman to win the prestigious event. "I came into this tournament really focused and it feels great to finally break through." |
