Though online gambling news out of China has become more and more rare as the political arena solidifies their prohibition for internet casinos, this particular story manages to throw the industry in an even more negative light – if such a thing were even possible. Chinese arrests of those involved in illegal gambling schemes (most of which take advantage of online gambling sites in one way or another) continue this month, with the vice director for the Ministry of Public Security making a statement, reaffirming that this is only the beginning of the internet gambling market’s purge.

Gu Jian, the vice director, made a statement to the public this week, warning those involved in internet gambling schemes that the arrests would indeed continues, and in fact the initiative to drive the use of online casinos from China had only just begun. China perceives all gambling sites as illegal, as none of them are licensed or permitted for use within the country, and has a blanket ban on all 2,000 plus sites. Gu did admit that gambling continues to exist in many provinces, only inspiring authorities further to eradicate illegal access to betting services.

Particular attention, Gu told a local newspaper, will be paid in the coming months to the Pearl and Yangtze river areas, which occupy a huge portion of the Chinese center for exports and industrial goods. The operators are making their jobs harder, he said, as most online casinos provide a Chinese-language version of their sites, despite the prohibition. Some have even gone so far as to send representatives into the nation to set up schemes, with a conservative estimate showing tens of billions of yuan being spent in offshore casinos every year. February 20th marked the end of the seventh month of a police campaign targeting online gambling operations, closing with 210 cases solved, and 918 arrests.
