The latest on the hopeful legalization efforts in the United States shows that a majority of the internet gambling industry is of the opinion that change could very well be in the near future, as more support develops for the overturnage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, and the way is more clearly paved for success. At the head of the effort is the internet casino world’s political hero: Congressman Barney Frank, who penned the bill that now carries 66 congressional co-sponsors, and has all of the industry hoping for legalization before the end of the session. The bill, numbered HR2267 and named the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act, has so far gotten further than other attempts made at overturning 2006’s UIGEA, with drafter Barney Frank seemingly ready to make his next move. According to a recent report by the industry news brief Card Player, support and optimism has been increased by the Poker Players Alliance, with their head John Pappas being quoted as saying that he expected HR2267 to move to mark-up early this spring. Presently, the bill is sitting in the House Financial Services Committee, as it has been since May of 2009. A non-voting hearing took place in December of last year, and the proposal is more than ripe for its congressional mark-up, which requires that the bill be read out loud, with congressional concerns and edits being verbally reviewed. The end of March could be the very earliest that said mark-up could see its completion, though it could be as late as May. Pappas also reviewed for the Card Player their recent activities in preparation for a committee vote. One of the key issues, he said, would be getting the support of the Democrat leader Harry Reids, though he has since been reluctant to sign on for support of online poker. |
