Some news that might be of interest to the online gambling industry comes to light courtesy of the American Gaming Association, which publicized select data from their year end reports for the public’s review. According to the latest numbers, the final quarter of 2009, dating from October to December saw a spenditure of $345,000 by the organization, all in the favor of legalizing the internet gambling industry in the US. It could very well be a sum of money well spent, as many experts in the online gambling world postulate that 2010 is the year for change in US government. With the health care bill on its way to President Obama for ratification, the impossible seems possible once again, and efforts are being stepped up to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. One of the groups in strong support of Barney Frank’s legislative moves is that of the AGA, a trade association that typically focuses on the land casinos throughout the US. According to the mandatory disclosure submitted by the AGA for their last quarter of last year, an impressive $345,000 was spent on lobbying. Issues lobbied for included internet casino interests as well as health care reform, marking one success so far. Indian gaming was yet another issue point, as was the mobile work force, tax fairness, employee free choice act and other business related proposals. They lobbied bodies such as the Department of the Interior, Congress and the White House Office. The group has the support and membership of a number of well known casinos in the US, including Las Vegas Sands Corp., MGM Mirage, Boyd Gaming Corp., International Game Technology, Harrah's Entertainment Inc., Bally Technologies Inc. and other casino operators and gambling equipment companies. |
