Some hopeful news has hit the internet gambling community this week with the confirmation by Barney Frank that he’s been able to sign his 66th co-sponsor for the HR2267 bill. The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection And Enforcement Act is the US’s best chance at overturning the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 in 2010, and with the latest addition of Ohio Democrat Charles Wilson, hope has been renewed in the bill’s likelihood for success.

Wilson is the 66th co-sponsor to sign his name on the bill, a true show of faith in the proposal’s chance of passage in this year’s Congressional session. It’s not Congressman Barney Frank’s first attempt, and apparently the lessons he has learned in previous attempts to overturn the UIGEA are being well considered, as Frank continues to show political precision, carefully steering its process and exerting meticulous care with the composition of the content. The motivation created by desperate economic needs by most states in the union can’t hurt either, as legislators are in tough bind to come up with money without further straining their constituent’s taxes.

A few states have already passed permissions for intrastate online casinos, taking advantage of what few loopholes the UIGEA has; the enthusiasm for those programs has similarly served to add pressure on a federal level. Many have June 1st as the goal date in mind for change, as that is the activation date for the final clause in the UIGEA, which will enforce the law as a whole. Wilson joins his fellow Ohioan legislators in support of Frank’s bill, as Democrats Steve Driehaus and Tim Ryan had already signed as co-sponsors.
