The poker season is heating up with some unlikely winners determining the fate of some high profile tournaments this week; the latest surprise hits the online gambling news circuit from Copenhagen, Denmark where a 22-year old player managed to hold out for the first place prize at the European Poker Tour. Anton Wigg, one of the youngest players to turn out for the event, held his own in the crowd of 421 competitors, winning the grand prize of €494,000 for his first place take. The European Poker Tour, hosted by online gambling group Poker Stars.com, is one of the largest tournaments in the poker world, attracting some of the most well-known names from the live and online casino circuits. In addition to his cash prize, the 22-year old Wigg was awarded a seat in the upcoming European Poker Tour Grand Final, to be held in Monte Carlo at the end of the tour. The win was well-won, as it took Wigg a good four hours to finally dominate his runner-up, the Italian player Francesco de Vivo. Wigg is a relatively new player to the poker world, with this particular title marking his first cash win in a European Tour. His last major win was for a mere €55,000 playing in Barcelona at the European Masters. The Swedish player seemed more than proud to win the Danish prize, and gave statement attesting to his excitement at being included in the Grand Final in Monte Carlo. He gained access to the Tour through a strategic win at the online casino Poker Stars.com, buying-in for $500 and winning a satellite game qualifier. Other major names at the tournament’s event included online casino celebrities Bertrand Grospellier and World Series of Poker champ Peter Eastgate. Another highlighted player was regular joe Morten Guldhammer, who managed to win his seat through a specialty promotion hosted by local newspaper Ekstra Bladet. Buying in for just a dollar, his eventual elimination saw him take home €57,000 – a huge return for the auto mechanic. The total prize pool for the Copenhagen event reached an impressive $2 million. |
