As the online gambling world turns on with eyes on both the developing French and Danish markets, the US is seeing quite a bit of exciting gambling action as well, albeit not in the political ring. Despite the fact that the date June 1st has flagged the institution of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act’s final installation, the World Series of Poker has begun in Sin City, Las Vegas, Nevada, where names gather to watch exciting poker unfold for big wins.

The first week of the Series is well under way with five different events being held side by side at the Rio Casino and Resort in Las Vegas. It’s the 41st Tournament, and after last year’s resounding successes, online and in-person railbirds are tuning in to find winners and losers galore as the best of the internet gambling community face off against seasoned pros from the live circuit.

The largest of the tournaments thus far is easily the $50,000 buy-in Players Championship, which has whittled down from an original entrant field of 116 hopeful players to the final table. Only three remained, holding off as David Oppenheim, Vladimir Schmelev and Michael Mizrachi fought for the heads up, and Oppenheim leading with a very solid 9,800,000 in chips. Schmelev was trailing with just 5,000,000 and Mizrachi down even further holding only 2,600,000.

Meanwhile, events 3, 4, 5 and 6 were also well under way; the first of which had been brought down to just 15 survivors at the time of writing. Event 3 is a $1,000 No Limit Hold’Em event that had originally attracted 4,345 players. Adam Daya was tenuously holding the lead, with Dash Dudley and Cory Brown close on his tail. Event 4 was a different player, offering Series participants their first Omaha/8 competition for a price of $1,500. Event 5 was another No Limit Hold’Em game, this time with a buy-in of $1,500, and attracted 2,093 players.

Finally, Event 6 was a $5,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’Em Shootout, which attracted some big names, well recognized by the online gambling community. Daniel Negreanu; 2009 WSOP Champion Joe Cada and Chris Ferguson showed up to play, as did Phil Ivey and Phil Hellmuth, Tom Dwan, Jennifer Tilly and Todd Brunson. Early reports showed that the game was to be capped at 2,000 players, a limit struck and stuck.
