As the home of gambling in the United States, it should come as no surprise to hear ever more news related to the internet gambling world’s interests originating from Nevada. The big news this week is the 41st launch of the World Series of Poker, in Las Vegas has begun, with the schedule packed fuller than ever. Fifty-seven events are planned for the 52 days of the tournament, with tens of millions of dollars up for grabs as the WSOP commences and the online gambling looks on. As ever, this year’s World Series of Poker is expected to draw now only the railbirds and live circuit poker pros, but it also offers up a keen opportunity for experienced internet gamblers to try their luck with a new venue of play. There will be plenty of opportunities for the small fish to try their hands in the big league with an impressive 57 events planned for the 52 days of action. Players had already begun to arrive well before the kick-off this past Memorial Day weekend, which was MC’d by Doyle Brunson and director of the WSOP Jack Effel. The first game of the series was that of a $50,000 buy-in, high-stakes mixed game (Texas Hold 'em, Omaha high-low split, seven-card razz, seven-card stud, seven-card stud high-low, no-limit Texas Hold 'em, pot-limit Omaha and deuce-to-seven triple-draw lowball) called the Players Championship. Though it was the game set for the official start of the series, one other game had been held earlier in the day, hosting 721 entrants for a casino employees game. During the opening ceremony, Brunson paid tribute to the now deceased Chip Reese. And the stars poured in. The Players Championship effectively replaces last year’s HORSE Championship, for which 95 players showed up. This year’s entries were even more encouraging with 116 players paying the ante, including a slew of well recognized names from the online gambling industry. Jason Mercier, Jennifer Harman, and Daniel Negreanu were up against the likes of Phil Ivey, Scotty Nguyen, Tom Dwan, David Benyamine and others. |
