Online gamblers in California can stop holding their breath as Senator Rod Wright came through on his promise to introduce a bill that could potentially result in the legalization of online poker in the western, liberal province. He launched an amended version of bill SB 1485 late last Friday, sending ripples of excited news through the supporting internet casino communities, as change could well be just around the corner.

Not totally dissimilar to Barney Frank’s leadership position on committee on a federal leve, Senator Wright heads up the California Senate Committee under whose jurisdiction falls online gambling and all related betting matters. The bill’s purpose is relatively simple: to find an intrastate solution to the online gambling questions being thrown about, introducing a program that would allow legalized online poker linked to land-based casinos, but totally accessible over the internet to California residents. The incentive is both obvious and incredibly powerful, as California has been one of the states most drastically struck by the recession and it’s ill effects on the economy. With billions in debt, the tax revenues generated by Wright’s program would be, quite literally, invaluable.

Should it pass, the SB 1485 would create three five-year contracts to be assigned by the California Department of Justice to Cali-based operators to set up online poker websites, limited on an ISP level to remain accessible in-state only. This version of the proposal is markedly different, note a number of internet casino analysts, in that the previous versions had been either developed by tribal casino groups, who have been lobbying heavily to protect their exclusive rights to gambling and the game of poker. Wright’s bill would open up the contract to the highest bidder, regardless of Indian casinos’ interests.

Also notably, Wright has flagged the bill as urgent, impressing upon his peers their desperate need to find a solution to the deficit, which is steadily climbing towards $19 billion. Similar attempts are being made in eastern states such as Florida and New Jersey, though no one has yet passed the laws in question.
