According to a report by the regional newspaper, the Jakarta Globe, it seems that more than one country is taking advantage of the FIFA World Cup’s action to bring down illegal online gambling rings. The police are paying much closer attention now that the football championship is in full swing. Apparently, in Indonesia, fans are taking advantage of Wi-Fi connections in bars and cafes to place bets by accessing internet gambling websites, located offshore. Whether or not the gamblers are taking advantage of the internet casinos in order to place regular bets, or are doing so in locations far enough away that live betting would make a difference in terms of cheating. Either way, the prohibition against online gambling in Indonesia have police on full alert, tracking the signals of cafes and clubs’ wireless internet offering to find the gamblers using the signals. Police allege that there could be no other reason for the cafes to offer wi-fi, no other reason why fans should bring their laptops to public locations to watch the games, while surfing the net. Four men have already been detained by authorities for supposedly acting as bookmakers for a illegal internet gambling ring that was set up to accept bets on World Cup games. According to a press release by the Surabaya police, the four had an additional 20 people working under them, collecting money from punters. The ring leader has not yet been brought in, however. Authorities estimate for the amount of money coming in through the organization to range from 500,000 to 2 million rupees, equaling out to $55 to $220 in US dollars per bet. The money being made by the group is about 15 to 20 percent. The daily revenues brought in could have been as much as 200 to 500 million rupees. |
