Its an existing market, with a healthy and exuberant demographic, a field just waited to be harvested. “All we have to do it tap into it,” said Rob Segal, the first chief executive officer for Virgin. The newest project for Virgin, then, is the development of an online competitive platform that will allow video game players to place real cash bets on the outcomes of battles, and games, whether they themselves will be playing, or just watching the action unfold on someone else’s game. Founder Branson revealed that the objective would be achieved through their partnership with World Gaming, a Canadian partner and software developer. Because video games are still considered a skill in North America, even in the US, it’s a perfectly legal alternative, allowing gamblers to bet on outcomes without concern for the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. To that end, Virgin has already announced that they opened an office in Toronto to be closer to the platform’s creation with World Gaming. “It wasnt a question as to whether or not there was an industry out there, the question was whos going to be the first person to figure out how to - in an automated approach - be able to offer a product like Virgin Gaming, Segal said to the Canadian press this week. “This is the next big thing, he said.
