An interesting conclusion is in development this week, that although not directly impacting the online gambling industry, nonetheless has gathered quite a bit of attention. It's a tale of gambling and theft, and though the thieves find themselves in court this week, the total sum of the money taken has not yet been recovered by authorities. The robbery took place at a major hotel in Berlin, with the team of thrives taking advantage of a live poker tournament. The four on trial now are the youths, ages varying from 19 to 21, who were supposedly acting under the direction of other, older men to be tried in an adult court. The four, from Turkish and Arab neighborhood in Berlin, are being tried in a German juvenile court for assault an robbery. At the time of the crime, it was big news not only in Germany, but also spread like wildfire among the rest of the online gambling community. Though court time has just begun, so far the four boys have given up no information as to the whereabouts of the €240,000 stolen in the heist. Only €4,000 was recovered in the investigation, though the youths confessed that they each received €40,000 for their participation. According to a report by the Deutsche Press, two others will face trial as well, the orchestrators of the scheme, which took place March 6th. At that time, four masked and armed robbers crashed into the poker tournament, blazing axes and threatening with what turned out to be a starter pistol. Their attempts to grab the prize money were partially hindered by the interference by the unarmed guards, who forced them to stuff the handfuls of cash into pockets and clothing as they ran out the door. Their connection at the table, a 31-year old participant in the tournament changed the plans, which were originally to charge the guards as they brought out the cash for the final distribution. With a phone call, the boys were told to come earlier, pitting themselves at more risk. Three of the four later said that they had never intended to become thieves, and had fallen into the plan by accident. One of their uncles was the other planner, and drove the getaway car. He is also in police custody. |
