While the Chinese police continue to emphasize their dedication to taking down illegal online gambling in all its forms this month, the authorities in Thailand are also taking the summer to crack down on illegal operations, blocking the use of online casino sites on the ISP level. Thai law also does not permit online gambling, and with the action surrounding the World Cup resulting in a surge of interest in sports betting, police are using the FIFA event as bait to take down illegal operations. Enforcement authorities are working in cooperation with the Information and Communication Technology Ministry, combining their resources as needed to block (so far) 248 illegal internet gambling websites from their constituents’ access. Going one step further, the government has decreed that any person acting in an official capacity for the state, such as police, will be summarily discharged if found to be also acting as a bookie. Police have set up a specialized hub for the mission of taking down the market, with a information and investigation center established at the Metropolitan Police Bureau. According to reports, a team of experts has been assembled just to monitor the internet for signs of betting, constantly scanning for any indication of wagering or direction to subliminal online gambling sites. Though official word is stagnantly optimistic, one representative from the police has admitted to the press that its not such an easy job. General Panupong Singhara Na Ayutthaya, one of the national police chief advisors, did affirm to the Bernama News that going after online sports betting is especially difficult, as server networks are most likely to be hosted overseas, well away from the authorities jurisdiction. |
