Ads Banned in Swaziland

Though the prohibition against online gambling is well known – and talked about – for nations such as the United States and China, they are no where near the only ones. Nor are they the only countries where internet casinos are prohibited where gamblers are fighting for change, as news out of Swaziland reminds the community that the industry is everywhere, and even in small countries where no specific prohibition against online gambling exists, there might well be a ban on the advertisement for the market.

The Prime Minister of Swaziland had to remind online gambling companies of this unfortunate fact this week, as a team of managers at the government-owned media companies were working together to lift a blanket ban on all advertising for ‘unworthy’ markets, such as smoking, alcohol, and of course internet gambling. The ban affects the ability of not only the state lottery but also television and radio broadcasting in general in the African nation. It’s not only against the promotion of gambling, but even news reporters are not allowed to mention the market, or report on anything related to betting, a tiresome blackhole that impedes the news market’s ability to do their job.

A question was presented to one of the voices opposed to the ban, that of Welile Dlamini, chief editor of the Swaziland Broadcasting and Information Services. He asked of the government why they weren’t able to report on gambling, suggesting that instead, the broadcasting companies should be able to use their own careful discrimination to present only the news, and take care not to promote the industry. Disclaimers, such as those used by American television networks, were also suggested, preparing viewers for questionable content.

The government does not, however seem inclined to budge on the subject, as Prime Minister Dr. Barnabas Sibusiso Dlamini advised state owned media to stick to policy. Discretion is not acceptable, in so much as if gambling is so much as mentioned during a news interview, the interview must end, and will not be permitted to air. Ironically, Swaziland is home base to a number of both land and online casinos, servicing the African people.
