Though the online gambling industry in the United States isn’t quite ready for software and gaming companies within national boundaries, that doesn’t necessarily translate for a lack of business elsewhere in the world. The US lottery operator Scientific Games Corporation, for example, managed to earn themselves a contract for a full service gambling system for both pari-mutuel and odds-based numbers games across the Atlantic Ocean in Norway. The question at hand this week is the question of whether it creates an opportunity for other companies, such as Playtech, to make similar moves. Confirmation was received this week by press for the internet gambling market that Scientific Games has been awarded a contract to supply platforming to Norway’s state-owned monopoly for online casino and lottery services. Norsk Tipping, the monopoly, has not yet denied the speculation that the new agreement could open up other venues for partnership, such as with Playtech, one of the business-to-business partners of Scientific Games. In related news, the new contract is an indicator that Norway could well be making plans of liberalization for their online gambling market, as they also were reportedly considering opening up applications for gambling operating licenses to offshore companies, in spite of the inherent competition that it would mean for Norsk’s monopoly. In the meantime, Scientific Games will be working on introducing their new lottery central system into Norsk’s existing platform, creating a strong basis of success to weather the 12 year contract. The contract isn’t set to go active until mid-2011, but the project is huge enough that preparations for the venture are already being made. According to a statement by the President and chief executive officer for Scientific Games, the contract was awarded following a ‘competitive procurement process,’ and that they were very pleased to have won the partnership with Norsk, “…a premier lottery that is at the forefront of delivering creative gaming through new technologies.” |
