Though the arguments against PAGCOR have been long-winded and long in coming, a new set of pleas to disband the state-run online gambling group have arrived on the scene. This time, the fight is going straight to the top as the plea comes from religious leader Archbishop Oscar Cruz, as he calls for the immediate disbandment of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, more commonly referred to as PAGCOR. It has been addressed to President Benigno Aquino III. The Archbishop has been at the forefront of the arguments, though taking a different approach from objecting online gambling companies who want to eliminate the monopolistic element, while keeping the nation’s friendly attitude towards internet gambling. Cruz is one of the founders for the People’s Movement against Jueteng, as well as the People’s Movement Against Gambling. His position is against gambling as a whole, not only against PAGCOR, but all online casino and their live cousins as well. He maintains that gambling is synonymous with corruption, with PAGCOR acting as the mascot in the Philippines. The pastoral letter was backed by a number of religious representatives, as Filipino bishops agreed with Cruz’s battle against betting. The new administration has been urged on multiple fronts to provide the government with a different means of income, one that wouldn’t affect the moral health of the Philippines. "On bended knee I ask the incoming administration to get rid of PAGCOR, especially as a government corporation," Cruz wrote in his plea to the President. Positive moves have already been made that could signal change, with the retirement of the group’s chairman, Efraim Genuino. He did so to allow the new administration more freedom in making their decisions, reports claimed. |
