While Malaysia would surely be hard to catch as the leader in enforcement against illegal online gambling, but police in Manila, Philippines seem to be doing their best to earn just as nasty a reputation with the internet casino community. The latest bust in the market comes from just this region, as authorities confirmed their success in taking down a live casino gambling ring this week, arresting seven in the process. The case is different from others in that sports betting is wildly popular in back rooms, and through illicit internet cafes, the complexity of developing a live dealer online casino is impressive to say the least. The arrests included those of four Koreans and three Filipino women, who were caught acting as croupiers. Four others involved in the gambling ring managed to elude police and are being pursued as part of the continuing investigation. When authorities dropped in at the backhouse casino location, the special task force found a slew of equipment, now all of it in police custody. In Manila, the apartment held gambling tables, and hi-tech streaming equipment. It has since been determined that South Koreans were the primary customer base, with bank wires being used to deposit and payout winning. LCD computer monitors, video camera, telephones, and a range of other equipment were all found. Authorities made the raid for the illegal online gambling operation under the cover of night, securing a search warrant based on undercover surveillance coverage. As far as they were able to determine, the whole operation had been going for several months, founded by a South Korean national, and abetted by local IT help. |
