The battle against online gambling in Australia seems to be gaining momentum as yet another article has been published by the Sydney Morning Herald this week. The piece in question suggests that the growth and expansion of the internet casino industry will have a definitive and sharply detrimental effect on the rates of gambling addiction, a claim that time and time again has been utterly disproven by studies and polls. The continued unfounded dedication that some members of the press down under seem to show for such a belief is forcing industry experts to wonder just who is misleading them with so much vigor. The testimonies given on behalf of the fallacy continue to go unargued in some parts of Australia, with the scientific results being ignored or hidden. One can’t help but wonder just how they are failing to miss the proof that shows online gambling has had little to no effect on the rates of problem gamblers, given the continued availability of more traditional land based casinos; there is no correlation between addiction and the convenience of internet casinos. The light continues to shine brightly on the issue of legalization of online gambling in Australia, as the forthcoming report by the national Productivity Commission is expected this summer, and hoped to contain a recommendation of regulation over prohibition. Licensing in Australia on a national level would mean a huge boost to the burgeoning industry, as well as for the taxation benefits it would provide the government. Currently, gambling is understood to be a very popular pastime down under, but with millions of dollars being siphoned to offshore internet casinos, the existing legislative is more damaging than it is effective. The loudest voice for the opposition continues to be that of Senator Nick Xenophon, who claims that the “rapid growth in online sports betting and poker will create a new generation of problem gamblers.” He is apparently unaware of the studies completed by Harvard Medical School, finding that such claims have no basis. Fear is the driving force behind Xenophon’s declarations, as he continues to move for a prohibition like that inflicted upon US residents by the UIGEA. |
