Though the elements of distraction and sheer pleasure are certainly present for most fans of online casinos, the possibility of winning big money can never be far from anyone’s mind. The exhilaration associated with hitting a jackpot has few comparisons as few know. Unfortunately, the tale of one couple who had such a moment doesn’t have a happy ending, as their fortunes were taken away as suddenly as they were given.

The couple, Mary Ann and Jim McMahon were visiting the Wildwood Casino in Colorado when the pair struck it rich – or so they thought. The slot machine was one linked to a progressive family of slots, and had been relatively generous to the pair prior to the jackpot being “hit,” to the tune of $11 million. According to an official statement by the Wildwood Casino, the machine malfunctioned, failing to reset after a smaller win was struck, for $1,627.92. Because it didn’t reset, the next win was misinterpreted as a jackpot win, telling the McMahon’s they had become millionaires – a fallacy.

Obviously, and very understandably, the couple has expressed deep disappointment not only with circumstances, but also with the handling by the casino, casting doubt as to whether they believe it was a mechanical malfunction. "If you do hit a jackpot are they going to come up with another story? It's a malfunction? It's not right," Jim McMahon said. No word has been given on what kind of consolation measure have been taken for their trouble.

This isn’t the first time that the machines at Wildwood Casino had malfunctioned, either, with reports confirming that it was the second such occasion in three months. The machine has since been impounded by the Colorado Gaming Commission for further investigation. The last time it went bad, it cost a winner what he thought was his $42 million dollar jackpot. It seems that some of the attention that US gambling authorities give to online gambling schemes would be better directed at securing regulations for live casinos in their jurisdictions.
