Ah, Malaysia, one of the prime enemies of the online gambling industry. Action in the monarchy is back this month with a rush in siege against internet cafes in the region, the police ever dedicated to their quest for eradication of online gambling websites and access in their jurisdiction. An unofficial war has been declared on the industry this week, issued by the Federal Territories and Urban Well-Being Ministry against gambling dens that are fronted as legitimate internet cafes. According to a piece by the local news source The Star, such venues will no longer be tolerated. Any establishment found to carry out gambling activities will be shut down, said Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin. The primary focus of the newly renewed attacks will be focused on Kuala Lumpur City, with the Ministry working in cooperation with the municipal government to break down online gambling circles. The Minister very apparently believes that they growing popularity of internet gambling sites and the cafes that provide access to them are a growing social problem that must be stopped now. The Ministry has it’s support as well, in addition to local police, as the Selangor Cyber Owners Association also pledged to cooperate, praising them on such a move. “We are in the process of coming up with by-laws to allow the city to act on outlets that break the law, but we hope the public will be our eyes and ears and give us feedback on outlets that are operating illegally,” the minister said. “We may not have the necessary by-laws yet, but there are other ways we can take action against them such as revoking their [Internet café] licences.” |
