Though Americans are beginning to notice somewhat of a recovery in their economy, other parts of the world (at least the online gambling world) are still struggling from the market drops, as the latest number for lottery sales out of Ireland become available. Sales dropped significantly for the year 2009, a clear indicator that all is not yet right with the world in terms of recreational spending. Quite literally, Irish lottery operators lost out on €40 million in sales, as the revenue from the gambling products came to just €815.1 million, indicating a drop of 11.4 percent in overall sales.

The executives aren’t happy to say the least, but on the bright side, at least their leadership board seems more or less willing to share the brunt of the blow as the chief executive for the Irish lottery, Dermot Griffin waived his performance bonus for the year. In an odd turn of statistics, the year did show an increase in the staff for the organization, growing from 92 to 99 employees, and resulting in a jump for payroll costs. The company has said that the growth was mostly in administration; the cost of the expansion jumped payroll costs €300,000.

Because their online gambling division is doing well, management said that 2010 holds plans to introduce more games to be accessible through their internet casino site. Around 6,000 gamblers are currently regular members in the online lobby, generating €744,000 over the last year. In terms of single game successes, one of the most dramatic has been that of the All or Nothing Daily Game, which made more than €3.4 million in the first three months since its launch in October of 2009.

Telly-Bingo was also up, increasing in revenue generated by 2.5 percent to make €14.3 million. Scratch cards weren’t nearly as popular as they have been in the past, dropping from €170 million to €163 million. EuroMillions’ sales were down as well, though the payout of €29 million to a major Dublin winner (the second largest EuroMillions payout ever) may have been a contributing factor to the game’s performance.
