Nine were identified as Indonesian women, and the raid took place over a span of 13 locations. The amounts of money bet were estimated as high as RM 15.1 million, all of which related to the sports betting industry, and flourishing with the surprising results coming in from South Africa’s World Cup. According to the press statement made by police, through Chief ACP Omar Mamah of the CID, the betting was done exclusively through the internet, with support services offered to punters via phone and even live agent contacts throughout Malaysia. Meetings were set up in a number of unlikely locations, including restaurants. The police investigations even revealed that some bookies went so far as to offer loans to their clientele to encourage betting. The raid itself was profitable, in addition to shutting down the online gambling scheme. Five desktop computers were seized, along with eight laptops, ten telephones, a printer, several modems, documents and cash. Additionally, the success has led police to tracing additional betting syndicate schemes, which have been reported to take in millions in wagers. "We are still investigating certain people whom we have identified as involved in the betting syndicates," Deputy Inspector General Tan Sri Ismail told reporters.
