Though the South African World Cup means patriotism, excitement, and the joy in sports for most soccer fans around the world, the police in Hong Kong will be using the event as bait to find and trap illegal online gambling operations. According a statement by the authorities this week, the police will be forming special task forces, cyber-patrols and keeping a keen ear to the service providers for any indication of illegal access to internet gambling sites, used to bet on the World Cup games. The public has been warned, with special announcements being proclaimed by police, cautioning residents to no engage in such practices. Per the law in Hong Kong, where gambling is quite a popular diversion, betting is strictly controlled by the government, permissible only though the official Hong Kong Hockey Club, or the state lottery, on a weekly basis. In addition to cyber-vigilance, the police will also be coordinating closely with banks and financial institutions, on a close look-out for suspicious transactions that could be traced back to online gambling. Their concern can’t be called unreasonable, as statistics show all over the world a huge surge of interest in internet sports betting sites during the World Cup, as football continues to be the most popular competitive sport on the globe. Held only every 4 years, fans have been waiting since 2006 to place such bets, and few will allow police to stop them from doing so. Last World Cup, Hong Kong authorities arrested 342 people for illegal bookmaking; their raids resulted in more than $20 million seized. "We have contacted the service providers of the website companies, in order to get some insight or intelligence regarding illegal gambling information," said Superintendent Man Tat-shing of the Hong Kong Organised Crime and Triad Bureau. "Some illegal websites overseas may accept credit card payment or bank remittance. All of this information we'll look into once the relevant financial institutions report it to us.” |
