One of the reasons that the online gambling industry has been so successful in the United Kingdom while it still battles the unreasonable fears in other nations around the world is the UK’s ability to recognize the industry for both its positive and lucrative points, as well as taking note of the risks and dangers associated with internet gambling. One of the primary risks is that of problem gambling, with a body in the UK celebrating the meeting of a fiscal goal this week, collecting target money to help combat addiction to gambling not only in online casinos, but land-based issues as well.

The charity, based out of Britain, is called GREaT Foundation, and focuses their energies on helping those who cannot resist the drive to gamble. It is funded solely by voluntary donations, and had set a rather lofty goal of collecting £5 million by the end of the year. The group has since announced that they met the goal six months in advance and will not work to identify the ways in which the money can be the most use.

The target was originally proposed by the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board, which also provided useful encouragement to groups and companies that a failure to ante up to the GREaT Foundation could well result in additional levies being placed against them by the government. It worked, as just over a third of the companies that currently carry licenses to operate online gambling sites in the UK made donations through the 2009/2010 year.

"We're hoping that as we've raised GBP 5 million those within the industry that did not contribute will see that it's not a hopeless cause and it can be done," reported Geoffrey Godbold, the director for GREaT. "It's in the best interest of the industry to avoid the question of a mandatory levy so I hope in the future it will be viewed as the 'in thing to do'. Of course with a new government there is an idea that it is a fresh start. The industry wants to be seen to be responsible."
