continued from Firms Rush for World Cup - 1 Some companies, in their hopes and rush for a French license, submitted multiple applications. Bwin, one of the undisputable leaders in the online gambling world, did so, applying both for a poker license and a sports betting license. BetClic, as a smaller company with more to both lose and gain, submitted applications for horse racing, sports betting and poker. Their chances of getting one increased with last month's admission by industry leaders William Hill and Betfair that for the time being, they would not be applying, hoping to get all their ducks in a row, first. At most, WH said they were still in the process of deciding whether or not to apply, leaving the opportunity - for now - open for other internet casino firms. The reason for not applying is found in the regulations themselves, which some have said are too strict to make it worth their while. Tim Phillips, the director for European public affairs for Betfair, made the following statement on the subject, saying: "Though its not impossible for a newcomer to create a commercially viable business, most projections show it will be very difficult to do so, given the proposed restrictions imposed on license holders." A major complaint has been the smaller returns to be paid to players, less than what would be in other markets, even European markets. Many, however, are taking into consideration the number of French players and their penchant for gambling. Roger Raatgever, the CEO for Microgaming, said "This is a milestone for us and marks the beginning of our first wave of applications, which we believe will see us rapidly establishing ourselves as market leaders in France." |
