Pham took first, leaving Arthur Vea to settle with running up after a dominating heads up that took only 13 hands. Vea seemed well enough pleased with his consolation prize, a check totaling $44,079. Though the Employees game didn’t draw a very large crowd, most of the online gambling community was keenly tuned into the first of the $1,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’Em games. It didn’t come close to meeting last year’s astronomical sign-up numbers, which came to a staggering 6,012, but rather a decent 4,345 entrants showed up to play the 2010 field. With the American recession keeping travelers at bay, and online gamblers at home, in combination with the ill-timing of the Memorial Day weekend, World Series of Poker organizers hope that the next few events will ramp up in participation. Meanwhile, a serious chunk of the action – and money – as well as attention of the internet casino community was to be found elsewhere, at the $50,000 buy-in Players Championship. By the early hours of Monday morning, 31 survivors had remained from the original 116 entrants, each going for the top prize of the pool, totaling more than $1.5 million. Alexander Kostritsyn was in the lead, holding 1.6 million in chips, but closely followed by David Oppenheim at 1.1 million, and Mikael Thuritz on his tail with a million as well.
