A win has finally come in favor of the online gambling company Sportbet for their argument in Australia that discrimination was taking place against major bookmakers. According to this week’s report, a final ruling was finally submitted this week in New South Wales, reading that Sportsbet was right in their litigation for discrimination, and calling for change in the way horse racing authorities determine the levies due for land-based and online racing bookie services. The ruling was made by Justice Perram, who decided that the authorities’ attempt to exclude the local TAB and New South Wales from sets of taxes and fees was unfair, when those same levies were being placed against the online gambling companies. Sportsbet was the lead in the arguments, though they were backed by other firms as well, representing the populace of interstate bookies and defending their bottom lines. With the ruling, the Racing New South Wales organization has been ordered to repay Sportsbet more than $2 million in fees. The fees were defined as an extra 1.5 percent charge on “back bets” placed through operators. New South Wales has earned for themselves a relatively accepted reputation for being friendly towards online gambling companies, not only those based domestically, but also offshore. In spite of the national Australian law that dictates internet casino operations to be illegal unless based domestically, the enforcement of said law continues to be an item of contention as it has never once been enforced. Other political arguments over the online gambling industry involve some conservationist lawmakers pushing for a censoring program that would block access to online casinos deemed ‘unworthy’ or ‘inappropriate’ for public eyes. |
