While plenty of attention is understandably being paid to the online gambling market in the United States as the beginning of June marked the official enforcement of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, the US isn’t the only nation looking for significant change in the industry, as the Danish seem to have finally – if only nominally – conceded to demands made by the European Union to open up fair trade regulations.

For members of the European Union, the demand for fair rights to trade and services among member nations has long been an argument in the online gambling industry, as offshore internet casinos compete for business in monopolistic nations. The case against Denmark made quite the mark, resulting in their concession to the Commission that they would open up their market to include other European operators – but not before giving their state run monopoly a head start in the game.

Danske Spil, the state run monopoly that currently operates all of the online gambling platforms in Denmark, will be given significant advantages as the regulation changes creep nearer. Beginning in July of 2010, the poker market at least will be opened up, liberalized from its current monopoly, though online poker operators will be required to be properly licensed before they can accept Danish players. The Danske Spil loophole lies in the fact that they already have a license, PLUS the licenses for foreign companies won’t even be available until January of 2011, giving Danske Spil a major head-start.

According to a report by the regional magazine Ace, the government has been quick to defend their right to do so, continually pointing out that they are conceding to the Commission’s demands for an open market. Spokesmen for the regulation committee even hinted at the possibility of use of ISP-blockers to ensure that Danish players don’t play elsewhere.
