The fate of the whole project could well lie in the hands of Cuomo, on his gubernatorial quest, even now in his current position as the Attorney General for the state. Cuomo has been given the responsibility to unravel the mess that surrounds the project, including determining the operator. The delay does little more than put off the revenue that could be coming in from the slot games. Much of the mess is a result of David Patterson’s term as governor, who now faces federal investigation for his management of the operator bids. Accusations regarding Patterson’s revelation to the operator AEG about a higher bid for the contract placed by competitor Penn National have led to the inquiries about improper influence over the system. And so, the whole of the bidding process must begin again from scratch. In spite of the political election being months away, Cuomo is already being hailed as an excellent option, and any choice will have to be very careful how he treads through the Aqueduct-Casino waters. One of his political slogans says that Cuomo wants to put New York’s “fiscal house in order,” a tall measure that would undoubtedly be helped by an effective plan to get the slot casino in order.
