Since their resurgence of raids on gambling rings in China this past February, recent statistics show that the authorities have been very busy, taking down and arresting more than 3,000 suspects in gambling operations. In total, 3,430 of the arrests made police by resulted in positive prosecutions, and the raids also meant 600 million yuan in seized funds, equal to about $88 million in US funds. Since February, Chinese police have broken down 670 cases of internet gambling, breaking up a solid 26 groups that were working in collusion with online gambling connections overseas. The statistics were confirmed by a representative for the Public Service Ministry this week. It’s not just those individuals who are running online gambling schemes and rings that the police are going after; they are not even stopping at those who choose to gamble online even at their own risks. Rather, police are now expanding their targets to include any person or firm that publish information on the industry, or providing addresses to online gambling sites still accepting Chinese users. Third party payment platform related to the industry are also under siege. The crackdown can’t go on forever, however, as the energy and resources going into the efforts are near depleting the resources the police have at their disposal. According to reports, it will continue only until August. The campaign has been backed and assisted through agreements with a number of unofficial organizations, as well, including the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the People's Bank of China, the China Banking Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
