Though by no means the only state pushing for the establishment of an intrastate poker system, the efforts developing in the State of California is one of the most well known. The latest developments have become available this week, as some of the Indian tribes are reformulating their position, considering that the new program could have more benefits than risks. The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians are positioning themselves to be the link needed for compromise between the politicians moving for the poker platform, and tribes reluctant to support the measure for fear their rights to exclusive gambling.

According to a report by the Desert Sun newspaper, the Cabazon may be looking at the revenue they could gain with an intrastate system, not the potential losses. With the inevitability of the measure, it could well turn out to be a beneficial perspective. As a trial run, the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, run by the Cabazon, has launched a free poker online casino of their own, linking to the internet gambling site VideoPoker.com, operated by Action Gaming.

So far, even the free poker game has proved to be quite a success, boasting by the end of the day on Friday more than 190,000 members. The site is run through a month membership fee, and offers prizes as opposed to cash for excellent game play. A spokesperson for the slot machine developer IGT, and an exclusive distributor for the Action Gaming software, confirmed that even in the US, the site is completely legal, not categorized as online gambling because of the lack of cash. It’s been called a membership site, offering play for fun poker, free of cost.

So far, the site is up and running, and definitely catching players’ attentions. Its been designed as an advertisement site, that will do less to encourage gamblers to use the online gambling site, and more to remind players that a live casino is waiting to offer them full services right around the corner. It also offers training tools that will introduce amateur players to the game in full.

“Offering something that keeps score is different than turning in your credit card to play against the house,'' said Cheryl Schmit, the director for Stand Up for California. “But you can say that socially, it begins to educate people to play online or entice them to, so in the event it becomes legal, you'd have more people playing online.”
