Online gambling is forever under attack, somewhere in the world, and although it hasn’t quite gotten that bad yet down under, the internet casino industry is certainly in the spotlight this week in Australia. Since the conclusions reached by the Productivity Commission of the government had been released to the press, the suppositions related to the recommendations have been flying wild, with some attempting to send panic thorough those on the wall of decision, hoping to instill fear before the laws can be changed too drastically.

The report issued by the Commission suggests, unsurprisingly to those within the online gambling community, that regulation and licensing of internet casinos is far more effective than prohibition, stating that setting up a program to regulate the market will, in the end, better serve the government and its people. To say the least, it’s a far better alternative than a ban, as the proposed internet filtering system would effectively become.

Australia continues to be one of the most affluent communities in the internet gambling industry, with some estimates putting the amount of money spent in offshore online casinos at as much as A$1 billion this year alone. Additionally, doing so provides no protection to the constituents at all should something go wrong. Poker sites alone are seeing a growth down under of 20 percent per year, demonstrating quite clearly the need for the local governments to get on board with reality and institute regulatory controls over access.

Of course, as always, there is the opposition, which continues to incorrectly insist that regulation of online gambling will result in surges of problem gambling. In Australia, sports and racing betting are legal, but access to poker, bingo, and casino games is prohibited. Companies that continue to support Aussie players are subject to fines up to A$ 1.1 million a day, though the law is largely considered unenforced. There is no punishment for players.
