Though the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act makes for a very impassioned argument, the US is not the only country making significant decisions in regards to the legalization of online casinos. Canada, just north, is also hot on the topic, as the provincial governments make moves to join the online gambling communities in full force, hoping to regulate the industry and thus reign in the taxes as profits. One of the most news-catching developments comes linked to the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, which is currently owned in partnership by a number of the local government bodies.

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation is pressing their operators heavily for the laws necessary to join in the market soon, and with few limitations. They recognize the popularity of internet gambling, and the reality that with so many offshore firms offering up lottery services over the web, customers will soon follow the developing trend of just buying their luck from home rather than relying on physical, store-bought lottery tickets. To keep up with the competition, it has become essential that the Atlantic Lottery Corp join the movement.

The firm’s stock is split four ways, between governments belonging to Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Newfoundland; and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. While the general consensus seems to be in favor of legalizing online gambling in order to compete with their neighbors of Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia, the logistics are giving lawmakers some difficulty. If they can get their act together, opening up Atlantic to online options would result in about Cdn $55 million for the governments in taxes.

The one entity seeming to be holding the group back is commonly agreed to be Newfoundland, which has told the press that discussions are being held on the matter. "Our government has not made any decision on whether we are going to support that initiative or not. That is something that we will consider at some time in the future,” said Finance Minister Tom Marshall.
