A different kind of win came this week out of South Korea for the online gambling community as police confirmed that their investigations had led to the shutting down of a cheating scam and operation. Online poker players are just a bit safer, reported the Joongang news, as authorities confirmed that they’d successfully raided the operation, and arrested 33 hackers. The group had used a malware program to prey on internet casino poker player, with relative success, stealing 55 million won from them from last November through May, a sum equivalent to about $45,265.

The group of 33 had leaders in two men, whose first names have only been released by police for confidentiality. Yu, 30 years old, and Kim, 29 years old, had headed up the scheme, and have since been charged by police for gaining illegal profits. The pair are nonetheless been esteemed as brilliant, setting up 11,000 robot computers to break into 700 different personal computer rooms located in hundreds of internet cafes throughout South Korea.

The police action against the ring was led by specialist corps from the Cyber Terror Response Center, based out of Gyeonggi. According to the press release by authorities, Yu managed to acquire a computer program from China last year called Netbot Attacker. He made and sold copies to his partner in crime, Kim, as well as others. The team worked together to install the program through the administrative side of internet café networks, with the program installing to allow the scammers to see the hands of their poker game opponents.

According to the report, the Netbot Attacker is a program that preys similar to DDoS hacker programs. South Korea had trouble with DDoS programs in 2009, with the use of them slowing down internet speeds all over the nation for days. Since then, police have increased their vigilance and been on the lookout for hacking schemes. It’s difficult, however, as a police spokesperson said that the latest versions of the program have been too quick for police to trace easily, bypassing even firewall and protective programs on PCs.
