As the summer wanes on, the final numbers for the beginning of the season are becoming available for not only online gambling companies, but also their land-based casino cousins. The latest statistics to hit the news forums relate to the mecca of betting in the US, Las Vegas and the State of Nevada, showing yet another disappointing drop on their revenue. With the recession beginning to abate, many had hoped that the temporary lift in profits would continue, but the final digits released in relation to May’s numbers showed instead another decline in their month profits.

The only positive element to the stats was the fact that the drop came only to 4.7 percent, reported the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Earlier this year, the month of February had seen a marginal profit, creating hopes in the online gambling community that had now been smashed with the third consecutive decline. May’s land gaming revenues came to just $847.2 million this year, compared with last year’s $889.2 million.

The reasons behind the drop were the casinos, which in an unusual manner, redirected the blame to bacarrat players, claiming that wins in the game were unusually high for the month. The casinos as a whole reported a drop in revenue of 6.4 percent, down to $450.2 million. Typically speaking, the game of baccarat has been a strong source of profits for the land based casinos, said a spokesperson for the Gaming Control Board, but the month of May was an anomaly. An increase of 7.1 percent was seen in the bets placed at bacarrat tables, totaling $743.8 million.

Slot machines were more or less on target from last year, the casinos only losing about 1 percent from last year, earning $565 million from players. It was a good recovery considering fewer gamblers were frequenting the machines, putting only $9.3 billion in to play, a drop of 7.5 percent. Table games were down in revenue 13.9 percent, with casinos winning only $269.9 million, in spite of an increase of 1.3 percent in business by gamblers.
